It is with great sadness that the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company #11 announces the passing of Past Chief and Honorary Life Member Mr. Horace Wright. Horace passed away on Wednesday afternoon August 21, 2019 following a sudden illness.
Horace was a member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Co. for 72 years, from 1947-2019, and served as Chief for 18 years from 1966-1984 (The longest serving Chief to date). He was also a member of the Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Company #24 and a 30+ year member of the Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company #16. He served as a past President of the Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association and was inducted into the Maryland State and Frederick County Firemen's Association Hall of Fame. Horace was active with Company #11 until he died and could always be seen in the kitchen at Thursday night bingo, the pizza stand at our annual carnival, and he never missed a company event or work detail. He was an inspiration to all of us and he will be deeply missed. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and his many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 26 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro. Interment will follow in Glade Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, August 25.
"Rest easy Chief, we will take it from here."
